I frequently assist firms trying to build high performance sales teams so building a model for hiring top performing sales professionals is often a sub-set of the engagement. In previous posts I have addressed the 5 Key Behaviors of Top Sales Producers but for this blog I am taking on one of the most important personality traits of the “Super Seller.”

While there are certainly MANY important personality traits that go into building a “Super Seller” the one MUST HAVE personality trait for me has to be “Positive Attitude.” There are certainly many additional personality traits that are high on list but for my money possessing a positive attitude is THE personality trait essential for long term stardom in sales as well as life in general.

Top performers EXPECT to win and EXPECT things are going to go their way most of the time. On the occasions when they don’t win they bounce back quickly because they don’t see themselves as victims and know they will win far more than they will lose.

Attitude is as essential to success as air is to survival. How many top performers in sales or life do you know that possess a “woe is me” attitude or tend to see themselves as victims? That is a rhetorical question because the answer is pretty obvious.

Can you “develop” a positive attitude? Absolutely! There are numerous publications on the power of a positive attitude and how to “develop” one by authors such as Earl Nightingale, Napoleon Hill, and many others. I would recommend “How to Completely Change Your Life in 30 Seconds” as a good starting point for interested parties.

Henry Ford said “Whether you believe you can or believe you cannot you are absolutely right.” That is as true today as it was when he said it.

Here is one last quote to top off the blog: “Perpetual optimism is a force multiplier” Colin Powell.
